Nice work. Fred is a branch I've most been meaning to get to, because he had 4 sons, ie, lots of Hartmanns. I'll get back to it one of these days!
In October, Larry Nerge will be here to explain the work he has done tracing family trees of all the original family's of Schaumburg. He e-mailed me 13 pages of Hartmanns! Let me know if you want to see them. I'll see if I can still find them!

Land that we no longer have...
Jacob here,
I Decided to finally join the ranks of the family in this new blogging enterprise. As for myself I am doing rather good at college right now. Summer term starts up next monday, and I work about 32 hours a week at custodial while putting in 8 hours a week in the Family History Library. All and all life is good, but this post is not about myself. This post is about Fredrich Hartmann. While I was preparing for a lesson I had been asked to give this past Sunday I started searching in the Illinois State Archives that can be found online. While looking through this helpful website for genealogy I ran across the Public Domain Land Sales Database for Illinois. I decided to give it a whirl and typed in our last name. I expected multitude of results with how common Hartman as a last name can be. However much to my surprise there was only 86 results that appeared. What surprised me even more was that only one of these was from the County of Cook. A Frederick Hartman. Granted the spelling is different then how we have it spelt I still felt compelled to search further in this puzzle that intrigued me. I opened up the record to see this. Telling me that the township number was 41 N and the range was 10 E so I looked at this map of Illinois. On it I noticed that 41 N 10 E puts me in cook county right about schuamburg ish. So I got a more detailed map of Cook County on it I was shown that 41 N 10 E is exactly Schaumburg. This started to excite me a little. I then proceeded to look further in to the location of the land Fredrich had bought. So I learned further as to how the plots of land went. From this document I learned that each township was split into 36 sections and each section was then split into subsections based on how the land was bought. Fredrich bought the southwest quarter of the northwest section of plot 23. I looked and was able to find an original land survey of plot 23. I was also able to find a certificate that was made upon the sale of the land to Fredrich. Although the name is spelled differently it still in my view the same person because of the location of the land being bought, right in the township of Schuamburg and the year that it was bought in 1846 fits perfectly with the information that we already have about our family. Anyways leave comments on any questions that you have or suggestions or anything else.

I'm so happy to see all of the posts from everyone. I didn't know if anyone would care about doing this, but I guess they do. Shirl, I loved the you-tube link for Marengo's putt, putt event. It was quite creative. Was there a contest or something to for all of the courses? As to putting a picture or video on your post, you just need to look at the toolbar on the add post writing spot. The second icon from the right that shows just a picture is where you click to add a picture. If you want to add a video clip just click on the first icon from the right.
Mom, you've become such an athlete!! I didn't know that you had it in you. You go girl!! And as for Erik and Colette, keep 'em coming.
So as for news here, Kristen went on a three day pioneer trek. A group of youth from our church pulled handcarts through mud, up hills and over rivers. They also went three days without a shower and came home appreciating modern plumbing and electricity. Overall, it was quite a wonderful experience for her. We should be getting pictures next week and I'll post a few.
As for my second week of summer vacation, I attended a district training program for a new reading assessment pilot program all day on Monday and on Friday I began a week long 3 hour grad class on reading and literacy. After a 30 page paper at the end of the course I will be able to move to the next salary lane. Hurray!
Lee has made a good dent on cleaning up his log pile and enjoyed his first campfire of the season. He was in heaven. The girls painted him a beautiful ceramic box for Father's Day. It was made with a lot of love and looks great!
Katie has enjoyed summer vacation, playing with friends on the block and began Band camp today. As soon as the weather warms up a bit and it isn't raining, we hope to spend a lot of time at the pool.

Aunt Shirley
Hi All!
This is great getting to hear and see what you all have been up to.
Mrs. Smiley, you make me tired!
We're doing fine although if we have much more rain, we are thinking about taking measurements for an Ark!
Since I work at the Emergency Management Agency for McHenry County, we have been quite busy as the mighty Fox River has been in flood stage for quite some time. We provide assistance to the municipalities in the county during any type of disaster....and I have seen about as many sandbags that I care to for the rest of my life!
Most of the people who have been flooded here are what we call "river rats" and they don't want to move for anything.
My knees are doing much better, and I am walking about a mile now.
I still have a few more weeks of physical therapy, and I hope they will be
able to get my stubborn right knee to bend enough to go down steps without assistance.
Believe it or not, I have survived the fun of the PT's tearing away the scar tissue. It only hurt for a little while!
Since we live in a little burg called Marengo, I thought I would share with you a You Tube video of the excitement in Marengo yesterday - the Putt Putt Challenge. Here's the website address, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qeSn2yb1UQY, and Joey you will have to get me the coding for linking websites and displaying pictures.
Of course, Dick is watching the Cubs game, and we are going in to the Cubs - White Sox game this Friday. Ought to be good one. If you happen to be watching the game on TV during the 7th inning stretch, you will be able to see us as we will be sitting just behind the Cub lady.

Sun City Smileys
June 10, 2008If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. This is me at my fourth Tai Chi lesson. Somehow or other I think this looks more like I am swatting flys than in a Tai Chi position. Oh well, I plan to keep at it and try, try again.
After one long session of coaching from Joey when I composed my first entry, I decided to try this one by myself. It looks like I made it and I have Joey to thank. She was a great teacher (what patience). I want to be in one of her classes.
I really enjoy reading each of your entries, and want to wish Shirley and Dick a speedy recovery.

School's Out for Summer!
Hi All,
Well school's out for the girls and I and all we've done since then is go to my school and work. On Monday, a colleague and I packed two vans loads of stuff from my classroom and moved it to my new school. At the school I worked in this past year the principal had asked 20 teachers move their classrooms, and thus we were having quite the domino effect of moving classrooms. The teacher that was moving into my classroom was eager to move in so she helped me move my stuff on Monday even though school didn't end until Wednesday.
I must admit though that saying goodbye to my students is the hardest part of my job. Each one has made an impact in my heart and I hope that I have made a positive impact in theirs. I also received many very thoughtful and kind gifts. I must admit, I think I had the best kids in the whole school!
Thursday was Katie's last day of school and she went to a pool party at one of her friends house right after school, so Kristen and I went to my new school in Elburn and started the process of unpacking my new classroom. We continued this process on Friday and finally finished it yesterday.
Kristen has been very busy this week with finals on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, a farewell party for a friend that was moving this weekend on Thursday. A camping sleepover on Friday in preparation for Girls Camp at our church. (She is going to be a Youth Leader and they worked on preliminary planning for the camp that will be held in July.) Then on Saturday she went laser tagging with some friends and they ended up in our basement that evening to watch a movie.
This afternoon Lee and the girls and I enjoyed playing a game of "Spoons". It was quite the competitive game, yet just a few hours later I can't remember who won, but I do remember that I didn't lose. I guess the main thing is that we had fun! Have a great week!

Mary's Olympic Try-OutsThought you would like to see that I am really trying to be more healthy. I go to an aqua aerobic class four days a week and I really like it. I am just learning how to use this blog so you will have to forgive me for my amateur attempts. I will try to do better as I go along.

The first picture
In case any of you were dying to know what the first picture of Erik and I together looked like, here it is. Pretty sweet. Erik was going to play in one of the many bands that he was in during college. I came, because I thought Erik was pretty cool. I think the suit and the hair influenced me the most. You may notice that we are not touching, because we are not even dating yet. We had only know each other for a couple of weeks.

Here we are
Hello to all. This is Erik, and I've been gently poked to post on this blog. So here it is. First, Jake I think you should email me I have some geneology questions for you to answer. Next for a quick update from the beautiful pacific northwest. Things here are fine, I am working for the Navy as a nuclear engineer (civilian) good thing, huh. I thought I should add some pictures these are from a hike Colette and I took on Memorial Day. The first picture is from the hike, apparently these are rhodidendrums and the are wild around here. The second picture is from the second highest peek in Kitsap county, on a clear day you should be able to see Bremerton where I work and Seattle.

It's June
I can't believe it's June already, which brings a lot of changes for us here in Aurora. I have finished packing up my classroom and will be moving my accumulation of stuff tomorrow to my new school. Katie will be finishing up 5th grade and that will mark the last time Lee and I have a child in elementary school in 21 years. Kristen, well Kristen is just finishing up her Junior year and that means just one more year till she's off to school.
As for this week as you can see Katie had a wonderful "bad hair day" at school. She is still three days later trying to get all of the red spray out of her scalp. We went to her Girl Scout bridging activity today where she advanced from a Junior Girl Scout to a Cadette. She is growing up.
Kristen is preparing for a week of finals. Tomorrow is her Anatomy final, and that is a tough one. Wish her luck!
And finally Lee, worked on his wood pile yesterday and it's down to just one row. Oh boy, watch out the radar for more free wood is on high alert!
The truly big news for me is that I finally I know(and I think I'll remember this time) how to download pictures from our camera. Wow, now you all get to see my mediocre pictures. Humor me please.
